Time and efficiency on one hand and efficacy on the other are critical elements in competitive breeding programs. Therefore, much of the research in plant breeding related areas is aiming at one or more of these elements. New technologies in the “omics” area will play an increasing important role in optimizing breeding programs. Genomic selection is an example of a technology application which is expected to increase breeding progress in even more. Based on the example of corn, it will be demonstrated how breeders have been able to optimize their breeding programs to meet the demand of developing better varieties faster and faster.
